Stomach Acid is Essential for Your Health

Posted at 04:38 AM on September 17, 2009

The stomach requires a very acidic environment to digest food and to destroy bacteria, yeasts, parasites and to stimulate the immune system.

Despite this, the media broadcasts advertisments exclaiming the proposed "need" for anti-acids, proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers, etc.

It's heard long enough that "everybody" starts to believe that stomach acid is a real problem.

It's quite rare to have an over production of hydrochloric acid, and when one reaches past the age of 50, the risks associated with low stomach acid production increase.

Without sufficient hydrochloric acid, the body cannot absorb vitamin B12, and it is also essential for the stimulating of digestive enzymes required to digest protein and absorb vitamins and minerals.  Hormones from the pancreas will not be triggered without enough stomach acid.

What about acid reflux you say?  With acid reflux disease, also known as G.E.R.D., the stomach acid is just in the wrong place.  If there is sufficient stomach acid, the Pyloric Sphincter will open up to allow the food to pass into the small intestine.

When there is insufficient stomach acid present, the undigested food starts to ferment, creating fermenting waste acids, which literally opens up the esophageal sphincter allowing the gas to push through.  If stomach acid is especially low, then this residue can cause acid reflux.

But then why do anti-acid works then?  The answer is that the acid wastes of fermentation are neutralized, but right along with what little stomach acid you have left.  While you'll be symptom free for a short while, the fermenting waste acids will return.

Many unsuspecting patients are rottening away in medical care facilities after suffering from a broken hip or fracture from taking anti-acid pills, especially with the use of proton pump inhibitors such as the "Purple pill."

The reason is, without sufficient protein digestion, bones will become weak and fragile because one-third of bone is actually made up of protein.

Even more alarming is that stomach acid is needed to kill off bacteria and viruses as mentioned previously. This fact alone significantly increases their risk of pneumonia.

Stomach acid also improves circulation.  Time will tell if this information ever reaches the medical mainstream, but I have my doubts.  Untold thousands will die of pneumonia from these pills.

What does one do if they are low on stomach acid?  Some require more protein than others and increasing protein intake can help stimulate more stomach acid.  Low thyroid is often a cause, and iodine intake can help stimulate the production of hydrochloric acid.

The bacterium helicobacter pylori literally sucks up stomach acid, so a patient positive for this test typically experiences acid reflux symptoms.  Eradication of this bacterium can help turn this around.

Other options are to try taking several grams of the amino acid glycine, which is also very helpful in stimulating hydrochloric acid.

Still there are other solutions, such as the intake of enzymes and probiotics.  Finally, another option is to take betaine or glutamic acid hydrochloride tablets.  If our digestion improves that is proof positive.
